Psalm 91:1-6 ESV – 1 He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will abide in the shadow of the Almighty.
2 I will say to the LORD, “My refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust.”
3 For he will deliver you from the snare of the fowler and from the deadly pestilence
. 4 He will cover you with his pinions, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness is a shield and buckler.
5 You will not fear the terror of the night, nor the arrow that flies by day,
6 nor the pestilence that stalks in darkness, nor the destruction that wastes at noonday.
We have no reason to fear as our God loves us and He will protect us and take care of us! Do not worry for he will never leave us or forsake us. If we stay in His presence we will be protected from these things. He keeps us hidden and protected.
Psalm 91:14 ESV – 14 “Because he holds fast to me in love, I will deliver him; I will protect him, because he knows my name.
God is always speaking. The whole word of God is a place of connection for Him to communicate with us. After God created Adam, He spoke to him instructing what He expected Adam to do and not to do.
Genesis 2:16~ Genesis 2:16-21, 23-25 ESV – 16 And the LORD God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.” 18 Then the LORD God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.” 19 Now out of the ground the LORD God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name. 20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him. 21 So the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh. … 23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.” 24 Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh. 25 And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
This passage above is just the beginning of God speaking to and having relationship with Adam and Eve. They also are dialoging with Him as it continues in the rest of Genesis. God did not leave us here to be disconnected from Him. He has made every effort and above to stay connected to us.
He died on the cross so we could further come into relationship with Him. He tore the veil between us and Him. Jesus is the intermediary, so we can have relationship and receive from God. During the Old Testament, God lovingly waited for His people to come into with relationship with Him.
He chased after them and they often refused. They wanted a King like the other nations. They refused God. They were unfortunately afraid. They had fear in their hearts. When Moses was receiving the Ten Commandments, they were afraid to hear God’s voice. Moses went by himself to receive for the people. They also were in unbelief. They made a golden calf while Moses was receiving for them on Mt Sinai. Read Genesis Chapter 19 and 20.
Today, we are 2,000 years on this side of Jesus’ death and resurrection. We have an enormous amount of scripture teaching and understanding of the word of God. There is a mass amount of knowledge to be gained about everything contained in the bible.
It is not a strange thing today to know we can hear God and understand Him. He is alive! He is real! And we can hear HIM! So here are some things to be discerning of His voice. God is waiting for us to encounter Him!
God talks to us the way he created us. Doctor Eby, a medical doctor, died falling off of a balcony, and hit his head. He was put in the morgue and pronounced dead. He was in Heaven and learned that God spoke to him as a doctor. He used terms that Dr. Eby was familiar with. So be at peace that he speaks to you the way you were created to be. Here is a link to a written story. We saw him on a television station where he related his story verbally and spoke of this information above. http://www.freechristianteaching.tv/the-story-of-dr-richard-eby-usa
We are very unique. I am bringing this out because we all have a unique experience hearing Him. The next steps below are basic understanding of hearing Him.
Practical steps are as follows:
Sit down in a quiet comfortable place with paper, pen and Bible.
Record your responses from the Lord so you can continue to discern His voice.
Pray that the Holy Spirit will reveal His voice.
The general rule of thumb is if you are asking God a question or are waiting for a response or answer, it will be positive. The first thing that comes up in your mind. I will explain a negative response below this.
Learning God’s nature and person helps with knowing it is Him talking and not the enemy or our own fears.
His answers, will bring peace or direction to your situation. The enemy would like to keep us stuck.
God will answer or direct with scripture.
God often will have a still and quiet voice.
Knowing the will for your life also is a huge indicator of hearing what God is saying to you. God is good and full of love.
Expect to have conversations with God.
Believe what He tells you.
Be careful to write down EXACTLY HOW HE TELLS YOU SOMETHING. Don’t change it. IT MATTERS.
Be intentional and persistent about hearing his voice.
He will talk to you when you least expect it!
God’s voice, stills you, leads you, reassures you, enlightens you, encourages you, comforts you, calms you and convicts you.
If you are eating a diet of let’s say violent movies or horror movies on the extreme side, you are going to color your hearing with those things let into your soul. Your soul is made up of your heart/mind, will (seat of choice) and emotions. Too much of anything will distort or stop your hearing.
Not spending the intimate time with the Lord.
Listening to other people’s opinion about your situation and believing them.
Misunderstanding of scripture.
Above I wrote about hearing something negative. It won’t be against the word of God. You might hear something like”you will lose your job” or “there is cold water in your house”. One statement is very direct the other not so direct but you get the point.
God will let us know something is coming or happening to reassure us it will be ok. Losing a job is alarming but you might get a better job or protection from something else you can’t see or don’t currently know.
I personally lost a job and shortly there after the company closed down because of illegal activity. If you experience something like this God most likely is protecting you. Another example was God told me I would get pulled over in my car and that everything would be ok.
A week later I was pulled over and there was no reason for them to pull me over. They never even said why they pulled me over! I had just made sure that my registration and insurance were in order in my car and God spoke to me at that very moment as I was organizing them. God will speak to you at times you may not think he will.
Trust God even if the information is negative.
In summary, this is a general list of hearing his voice.
Here are a few verses about hearing His voice. I encourage you to do a study to help your hearing. It is about having relationship with Him.
Deuteronomy 4:36 ESV – 36 Out of heaven he let you hear his voice, that he might discipline you. And on earth he let you see his great fire, and you heard his words out of the midst of the fire.
Psalm 95:7 ESV – 7 For he is our God, and we are the people of his pasture, and the sheep of his hand. Today, if you hear his voice,
John 10:3 ESV – 3 To him the gatekeeper opens. The sheep hear his voice, and he calls his own sheep by name and leads them out.
Hebrews 3:7, 15 ESV – 7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says, “Today, if you hear his voice, … 15 As it is said, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
Hebrews 4:7 ESV – 7 again he appoints a certain day, “Today,” saying through David so long afterward, in the words already quoted, “Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts.”
We pray that we can hear your voice and have relationship with you. We want to be in relationship with you. We break any hinderances off of us to hear your voice. We want to be closer to your heart and receive your love and know you!
The keys to hear God rely on our willingness to receive from Him. Learning how to physically sit down and receive can be challenging. In my search to know God, I had the hardest timeeven physically sitting down. Today, I can say that it was my heart not knowing God. In those days, I just knew my heart needed something greater than myself.
We carry the sacred “breath of life”. God puts in us His “creative and sustaining power”. Genesis 1:27 KJV – 27 So God created man in his [own] image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.
Genesis 2:4 KJV – 4 These [are] the generations of the heavens and of the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens,
Colossians 1:16-17 KJV – 16 For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether [they be] thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17 And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.
John 1:3 KJV – 3 All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
Hebrews 1:2 KJV – 2 Hath in these last days spoken unto us by [his] Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds;
God made us in the “secret place” and “out of nothing”. Psalm 139:15 ESV – 15 My frame was not hidden from you, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Revelation 4:11 ESV – 11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed and were created.”
We were created to have relationship with God. Exodus 3:15 ESV – 15 God also said to Moses, “Say this to the people of Israel, ‘The LORD, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you.’ This is my name forever, and thus I am to be remembered throughout all generations. Our relationship is more than knowing God as Creator, but as the center of our heart’s dreams and the vision of your existence. Love seeks to build up and elevate a person to be, beloved.
God gives us a heart shaped hole to be filled with him. We have the freedom to choose Him, choose Love. If we choose to reject Him, we reject Love.
We have to trust that God loves us, knows us and hears us.
So in our quest to have relationship with Him we have to make room for Him and time for Him. In this next section, I am going to relay my own struggle to hear Him in the very beginning of my own quest. It is very relatable to most people. I hope it helps. It was a very step by step process and for me very hard to begin and continue. I will say it became easier as time went on. The more disciplined I became the easier it became.
I went through this process after realizing a few things. I actually didn’t realize, I was actually looking and searching for God. I started out by reading things unrelated to God. Things like the local ad booklet in our area. I started reading things looking for depth and some kind of revelation. Nothing felt right. These things didn’t give me any depth or understanding.
These things still left me searching harder and empty. Then I started revisiting my Catholic upbringing. The use of the rosary didn’t fulfill anything I seemed to need. I tried doing other rituals I learned but to no avail, I still came up empty.
I started seeking out older people hoping they knew something I soon realized that they were not wise. I thought for sure someone older should know something about life. When I realized that I was understanding more about life than older people, I knew I needed to make great change.
My life was becoming increasingly harder because of the abusive marriage I was experiencing. I had many reasons to need a great deal of understanding and help in my life.
This is what I experienced for quite awhile until I was able to be rooted in God. These kept me from hearing Him. I finally sat down and started reading my Bible with the following difficulties:
I physically couldn’t even sit still long enough to read.
I was moved by every sound I heard.
I was hoping I could get up and be mobile.
My thoughts were far from focused. They were quite scattered.
I had every other distraction in my mind.
Daily consistency was like hoping I could be a millionaire overnight.
I avoided sitting down at all costs.
God felt strange and uncomfortable.
My question was “Do I trust you?”
Should I spend time doing things I knew I could control.
I had an unhealthy view of God.
What was everyone else going to think? ( Knowing my Family really didn’t have this kind of intimate relationship with God.)
I really don’t know where to start or how.
Will I be able to hear him?
Will he really speak to me?
Is God real?
The Bible is scary.
What am I searching for?
What was I allowed to expect from God?
After reading certain passages, I thought,” What the heck does that mean?”
I also thought after reading certain things,”They never told us that in church!”
Keeping track of all of what is written in the Bible, “Oh heck, I will never be able to memorize this stuff.”
As I became more interested, the enemy would interfere in every way possible and cause tons of doubt in what I had already read.
Some of my other thoughts were, “Oh crap, now I really can’t talk.” “No one will understand me.”
After learning more and more, I realized I needed help learning and growing. My next question was,”Who is going to help me? and “I am going to go crazy because I have to talk to someone to help me understand more.”
These were just a sample of God drawing me to himself. I was in need of relationship with Him and the empty hole that needed to be filled. I was in lack of Him and He was the person to fill up the emptiness.
There is much more to relationship. This was just the very beginning.
Affirm that you are loved by Him, accepted by Him, nothing can separate you from Him and the power of His Love. Receive His Love so you can hear from Him. Trust that He Loves you.
1 John 4:18 ESV – 18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear. For fear has to do with punishment, and whoever fears has not been perfected in love. Colossians 3:14 ESV – 14 And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony.
Today, I pray that perfect love casts all fear out of your being so you can receive the love that Jesus died for. I pray that your mind is devoid of all fear so you can hear him and receive all that he has for you.
‘The most amazing song of all, by King Solomon. Let him smother me with kisses—his Spirit-kiss divine. So kind are your caresses, I drink them in like the sweetest wine! Your presence releases a fragrance so pleasing— over and over poured out. For your lovely name is “Flowing Oil.” No wonder the brides-to-be adore you. Draw me into your heart. We will run away together into the king’s cloud-filled chamber. We will remember your love, rejoicing and delighting in you, celebrating your every kiss as better than wine. No wonder righteousness adores you!’ Song of Songs 1:1-4
When Yeshua came to the earth to be crucified, He came with the intention of not only to erase the punishment for sin, He came inhabit us. According to the following scripture, God wanted to dwell in the sanctuary. Man’s heart.
Exodus 25:8 KJV – 8 And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.
John 15:5, ESV – 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
In John, He states that if we are dwelling with Him, we will flourish and succeed. We will live. If we allow Him to get close enough. God’s whole reason for sending His son is to have an intimate relationship with us.
The Hebrew word for “sanctuary” is mikdash (מִקְדָּשׁ), which comes from the root word kadash (קָדַשׁ), “to be set apart as sacred.” A mikdash is therefore a “set apart space,” or a “holy place” that represents something profoundly treasured – a place of beauty and worship, a refuge, a place of rest. Other words that share this root idea include kedushah (holiness), kiddushin (betrothal), kaddish (sanctification), kiddush (marking sacred time), etc.
We often have a very misguided understanding of the word “holy.” Many times I have experienced other people’s understanding of it as a thing of “better than.” I am not sure where they received their understanding.
Our thinking needs to be lined up with God’s heart. He is waiting for us to receive Him into our heart in the sacred place. He is asking us to dedicate that place as only set apart for Him. A place where you can be at peace with your relationship with Him. He calls us Holy like he is Holy.
1 Peter 1:16 ESV – 16 since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.”
God is calling us up to His determination that we are Holy. He is calling our hearts a sacred place to be with Him. He says that we are called into His sacred space with Him. It is a place where all the amazing exchange goes on between us and Him
John 17:22-23 ESV – 22 The glory that you have given me I have given to them, that they may be one even as we are one, 23 I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me.
The whole chapter of John 17 goes onto describe, God the Father’s hope of us being one with Him and displaying the Glory of God. It also states how we are not of this world and we carry the love of God.
Today Jesus I ask you to dwell with me and inhabit my every fiber. I believe that you died for my sins and I am called to be Holy like you are Holy. I love that you want to dwell with me and I am sacred in your eyes. Amen
And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth.Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.
